You kept working, figuring Claude would just stop when you hit your limit. It didn't. Now there's a charge on top of your plan you didn't mean to pay.

A setting called usage credits was probably on. When it's on, once you use up what's included in your plan, Claude keeps charging you extra automatically instead of stopping. The extra gets billed on top of your plan.
It can quietly cost you real money every month without you noticing.
Most people never open the Usage page. They figure the limit is a wall and Claude will stop when they hit it. With usage credits on, it doesn't stop.
The setting sits next to two others most people never notice: a monthly spend limit and a usage alert.
Turning off usage credits, or setting a real spend limit, is the fastest way to stop a surprise charge before it happens. It costs you nothing to check.
The setting stops the surprise. It doesn't stop the leak. If you're running out often enough to rack up extra charges, look at how the usage gets spent: one long chat carried into every question, the most expensive model doing one-line jobs, a notes file nobody ever trims.
Check your Usage page weekly, and fix the leaks before you think about a bigger plan.
I kept working one afternoon, figuring Claude would stop at my limit. It didn't. Usage credits had been on the whole time. An injury put me in the hospital and ended my construction career for good. I taught myself AI at 53. Gen X Still Standing is what I built after.

Why did Claude charge me extra?
Usually because usage credits were turned on. Once you use up what's included in your plan, Claude keeps charging you extra automatically instead of stopping.
Where do I find the usage credits setting?
Go to claude.ai in your web browser, click your profile picture, click Settings, then click Usage.
Can I cap how much extra it charges?
Yes. Look for Monthly spend limit on the Usage page. That's the most extra money you've allowed it to charge you.
How do I get warned before I hit my limit?
Turn on the usage alert next to the spend limit. Claude emails you before you're anywhere near your limit.
Will Claude stop on its own when I hit my limit?
Not if usage credits are on. It keeps going and bills the extra on top of your plan.
