Claude in Plain English

Claude usage limit reached?
The plan probably isn't too small.

You're halfway through the email. Halfway through the chapter. Then Claude tells you you've hit your limit and to come back in a few hours. So you start thinking about a bigger plan.

The short answer

Most of the time the plan isn't too small. Your usage is leaking out.

Every time you send a message, Claude generally works through your whole conversation so far, not just the new question. That one chat you've had open for weeks, with your business, your emails and your book all in it, gets carried into every short question you ask.

A bigger plan doesn't fix that. It's buying a bigger tank to fix a fuel leak.

Why a short question can cost a lot

Your usage is generally measured in tokens: small chunks of text, roughly a piece of a word. Your message counts. Claude's replies count. And so does most of what came earlier in the conversation.

That's why a short question in a long chat can cost more than a long question in a fresh one. It's also why a chat that's been running for weeks feels slower.

The fix: one topic, one chat

Worried about losing your place? You're not losing anything. Your files and notes are still saved. Upload your notes file in the new chat and type: "Catch me up on where we left off with [name of your project]."

Of the six habits that make a Claude plan go further, this is the biggest one.

When it's bigger than a quick fix

If you start fresh chats and still hit the wall, check your Usage page before you do anything else. See whether usage credits are turned on and whether a spend limit is set.

If you're using the habits and still hitting limits regularly, then it's time to look at whether a bigger plan makes sense. Nobody publishes exact message limits per plan, so check claude.com/pricing for current numbers.

Why I'm telling you this

I had one chat running for almost three weeks on a big project. Every answer got slower and I figured that was normal. It wasn't. Before any of this, I ran a construction company in Colorado and did hazmat work. I taught myself AI at 53.

Quick answers

Why do I keep hitting my Claude usage limit?
Most of the time your usage is leaking. Every message generally works through your whole conversation so far, so one long chat gets carried into every short question.

Will a bigger plan fix it?
Usually not by itself. A bigger plan just gives you more to leak out of. Try the habits for two weeks first, then decide.

Do I lose anything if I start a new chat?
No. Your files and notes are still saved. Upload your notes file and ask Claude to catch you up on where you left off.

How many messages do I get on my plan?
Nobody publishes exact message limits per plan. If anyone tells you an exact number, they're guessing. Check claude.com/pricing for current numbers.

Why is Claude getting slow?
That usually means a long conversation history or a very long file being re-read every message. Start fresh, or trim the file.
