How to jump-start a car.
The order isn't optional.

Somebody's stuck in a parking lot, hazards on, about to pay a tow truck driver $120 to show up and do something that takes four minutes once you know the order. Here's the order.

The short answer

When the battery is too weak to start the car but not dead enough to need replacement, a jump-start gets you going. Done in the right sequence, it's a five-minute, low-risk job.

The one thing you can't skip is the order of connection. Someone jump-started a car with the cables reversed once and melted the wiring harness on a $40,000 vehicle. That's not a reason to be scared of it. It's the reason the order matters.

What you need

Cost: $0 to $80 for a jump box if you don't own cables. A set of jumper cables costs twelve bucks.

Step by step

Where the last clamp goes

The most common mistake is connecting the final ground clamp directly to the dead battery's negative terminal instead of bare metal elsewhere on the engine. That's what creates sparks right next to battery gases.

The real hazards are sparks near battery gas and reversed polarity. Following the exact order above, and grounding the last connection away from the battery, is what prevents both.

When it's the battery, not the jump

If the car won't hold a jump at all, needed one yesterday too, or the battery looks swollen or corroded, that's a battery that needs replacing, not another jump.

Why I'm telling you this

Quick answers

What order do you connect jumper cables?
Red to the dead battery's + side, red to the good battery's + side, black to the good battery's - side, and the last black to a metal part of the dead car's engine.

Where does the last black clamp go?
On a metal part of the dead car's engine. Do not put it on the dead battery. That's what creates sparks right next to battery gases.

How long do I let the good car run?
Start the good car and let it run for 2 minutes, then try to start the dead car.

How do I take the jumper cables off?
In the exact opposite order you put them on. Then drive for at least 15 minutes so the battery can recharge.

When do I need a new battery instead of a jump?
If the car won't hold a jump at all, needed one yesterday too, or the battery looks swollen or corroded.
