Fix It Yourself

Car battery dead at 7 AM?
Replacing it yourself is usually simple.

The dashboard light's been on for two weeks. Then one morning the key turns and you get that sick half-second of silence. Now you're standing in a parking lot calling someone, rearranging your whole day around a battery.

The short answer

Battery swaps are usually simple, until they're not. The "not" almost always comes from skipping the owner's manual. Some newer vehicles need the battery registered to the electrical system, or a window relearn procedure. Read the manual first and most 12V swaps are straightforward.

Cost: $130 to $280 for the correct battery and basic gear.

Where it goes sideways

The real hazards are shorting the terminals and acid exposure. Turn the car fully off before you touch a cable. The order the cables come off and go back on is in the playbook. Hybrid and EV high-voltage batteries are a completely different thing. Not a starter DIY job.

Is it really the battery?

This page is for a weak or dead 12V battery in a vehicle where the swap is genuinely straightforward. Keep in mind that a no-start can be a bad connection, not a bad battery.

When to hand it to a pro

If the battery's buried under trim that takes real disassembly, it needs registration you can't do, or it's a hybrid or EV and you're unsure, hand it to a pro.
