Fix It Yourself

Wipers streaking?
The blades are telling you they're done.

It's raining hard, it's dark, and every pass of the wiper leaves the same streaky smear. You're leaning forward in your seat like that's going to help. This is five minutes of work in your driveway.

The short answer

Wiper blades are a wear item, like shoe soles. They're designed to degrade, and streaky is the wiper equivalent of a bald tire telling you it's done.

Most people don't replace them until visibility is actually bad, which is exactly the wrong moment to be dealing with it for the first time. New blades and washer fluid run $15 to $40.

Get the right size first

Check your owner's manual or the wiper packaging for the correct blade length. Front blades are often two different sizes.

The two most common frustrations are buying the wrong blade length, and forcing a universal blade onto a connector it wasn't designed for.

What you need

Doing it yourself

The full step-by-step is in the Fire the Guy playbook. Grab the free list below to get started.

Watch the arm

This is about as low-risk as car maintenance gets. The only real risk is letting a raised wiper arm snap back onto bare glass, which can crack it. Lower the arm gently back onto the windshield. Don't let it snap down.

When it's not the blades

There's no real "hire a pro" case for a blade swap. If the wiper motor itself is failing, with a grinding noise or wipers not moving at all, that's the only version of this job that goes beyond new blades.
